Work Camp '08 Round 2

This blog entry is being created by Family Group members in the group led by Steve Miller and Mandy Marn.

We woke up around 7, which was way too early. This morning, for breakfast, we had cereal and oatmeal. After breakfast, we met in our family groups for devotions before heading off to work at the Asbury Shalom Zone. Traffic report on the way- kind of stuffy, but safe with no accidents. When we got to the ASZ, we divided into our five work groups- Steve Miller led the electrical group, Josh Elders led the dry wall group, Dale Himmler led the metal scrap group, Bob “The Builder” Lewis led the roofing group, Karen and Anna led team Tetanus group on the fourth floor to clean up the EXTREME mess. Every group had their own adventure.
The roofing group ripped apart the decaying rubber roof to find holes that looked like Swiss cheese. As a result of the many holes, the merchandise underneath on the bottom floor got wet. The Tetanus team was in charge of cleaning the fourth floor, which was deadly to asthmatic people. It was caked with dirt, dust, and black bags filled with stuff including metal, which was rusted. That’s how the team Tetanus got their name. Their adventure for the day started when they were moving some black bags and found, supposedly, a dead cat carcass. Frantically, the girls ran to the other floors to spread the news. After everyone ran up to see the “cat,” it was proven to be a ball of dark, dirty yarn. They probably didn’t know what it was exactly because it was a very dark room with no electricity, and the windows were boarded up. The electrical group had to do some tedious wire work, starting with attaching conduit to the ceiling, measuring out 140 feet of wires, and untangling them to get ready for tomorrows day. The dry walling group started out their day by doing some demo work on one wall and the ceiling. They had to move boxes full with little things to make room to patch and attach the ceiling. Measuring was one of the main things for the day to get ready for tomorrow. The metal scrap group had to disassemble metal objects to take the metal and sell it for money. One of the objects was to take apart a treadmill.
The days were long when working two hours, short lunch break, then back to work for four more hours. Even though it was long, hot and stressful, it was well worth our effort and felt good. The next three working days will help put us in other people’s shoes and see the world in other perspectives.
Dinner was prepared by Heather, Mandy, Sarah, and family group B. We had a taco bar with many toppings to load them. Tonight we are meeting in worship then going to get some ice cream at Lakeside Shop.
We will all get a good night’s sleep for we are “dead,” like the “cat.”

After Night,

… Off to the Getty!!!

Hi Everyone. Here is the devotion for Wednesday.

Strength

Years ago, a young sailor went to sea for the first time. Soon after their departure, his ship encountered a heavy storm and the sailor was commanded to go aloft and trim the sails. About three quarters of the way up, the young sailor made the mistake of looking down. The roll of the ship combined with the tossing of the waves made for a frightening experience. The young man started to lose his balance. At that moment, an older sailor underneath him shouted, “Look up, son! Look up!” The young sailor did as he said — he looked up and regained his balance.
Similarly, when our focus is on the circumstances that we face, the waves of life, we can easily lose our balance and our direction. But when we switch our focus on to the victory that the Lord has already provided — it is then that we will be able to maintain our stability, finish the assignments we’ve been given and get to the top!
Are you feeling unstable today? Let’s look up! There’s no reason to look anywhere else — God has the victory already won!

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives strength to those who are tired and more power to those who are weak. The people who trust the Lord will become strong again. They will rise up as an eagle in the sky; they will run and not need rest; they will walk and not become tired.

Stay Strong! Nick

Hi, everyone!
It sounds like work camp is off to a great start - i.e. everyone is working hard! So glad that you've got to meet Gary and his wife at The Harvest House! It's an awesome place to stay and they do have a remarkable faith story! Please give them my best.

Nick, your devotions are wonderful! I'm sure everyone is enjoying them.

Hope that things are still going well. Wedensday and Thursday are the tough days - after that you're home free! Just hang in there and remember the scripture: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

The Church staff remembered you in prayers yesterday at staff devotions and I'm remembering you every day.

Take care - we love you.
Mrs. O

P.S. Gregg and Heather, Mrs. Danley keeps telling Martin that you'll be home soon!
